Segovia Travel Guide
Introduction
Segovia is a stately city, a medieval city, a fortified city. It sits high on a promontory north of Madrid, overlooking the rivers Clamores and Erasma at their convergence. It is frequently referred to as the "Stone Ship," for its uncanny resemblance to a beached ship. Here, Segovia's Moorish Alcázar, precariously propped on the edge of the cliff, is the bow of the ship, while the Roman aqueduct at the base of the hill, for which Segovia is most famous, is the stern. And the triumphant tower of the city's Gothic cathedral, set in the Plaza Mayor, is the mast. Indeed, well-known Basque writer Miguel de Unamuno, who had deep associations with Segovia, once described the city's Alcázar as "a golden stone steamship sailing through an ocean of wheat."

Segovia's principal interest lies in its old city, largely the colorful section between the Plaza de Azoguejo and the Alcázar, where pricey restaurants line the medieval streets, serving, among other things, the city's famous oven-baked suckling pig. The city's top attractions are of course its picturesque cathedral and eye-popping aqueduct, together with a proliferation of equally interesting Romanesque churches. The Alcázar castle remains high on the list as well.

Segovia is situated some 57 miles (93 km) north of Madrid – 30 minutes by high-speed train – with the Sierra de Guadarrama offering a scenic backdrop, roughly 7.5 miles (12 km) distant.
