Several department stores, including El Corte Inglés and FNAC, are situated around the Placa de Catalunya. El Corte Inglés carries all the standard items you can find in your own shopping malls, albeit on a smaller scale and with a supermarket downstairs (a very upscale Wal-Mart someone once called it). FNAC sells high-end electronics and has one of the two best selections of English-language books in town. For an even larger selection of books, walk six blocks up the Passeig de Gràcia from the Placa de Catalunya to reach the Casa del Libros on the right.
