In 1897 the Swedish king Oskar II invited the Thai King Chulalongkorn for a visit to experience the countryside of central Sweden. After his visit, the power company Vattenfall put up a sign that said “King Chulalongkorn Road.” Some Thai visitors noticed the sign while passing through the area about 100 years later. Not long after, some wealthy Thai-Swedes decided to build a pavilion to honor their former king. The king is still regarded highly in their country even today since he abolished slavery, among other accomplishments. The pavilion cost 12 million kr/$1.3 million and is the biggest of its kind outside of Thailand. About 60,000 people visit this masterpiece every year.
