Historic Napa Valley winery, originally established as Inglenook Vineyards in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain who made his fortune in furs in Alaska. The winery itself is housed in a splendid, ivy-covered, Gothic-style stone chateau, built in 1887 and surrounded by estate vineyards. The famous chateau, together with the original vineyards, was purchased by filmmaker Francis Coppola in 1995, and restored and reopened in 1997 as the Niebaum-Coppola Estate. Winery tours feature sensory evaluation of wines, and include a visit to the winery’s historic aging cellars where you can view some antique winemaking equipment and old photographs depicting the history of the winery, as well as the “captain’s” collection of wine glasses and goblets. Niebaum-Coppola produces primarily vintage-dated varietal wines from grapes grown in its estate vineyards; offerings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, a Claret blended from estate Cabernet, and a sparkling white wine made from Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc, and bottled under the Sofia Bland de Blanc label. Open for tours, tasting and sales, daily 10am-5pm. Museum and wine library on premises.
