If you want to expend a little more energy, try Katie’s Wekiva River Landing,The operators, Katie and Russ Moncrief, built the campground and canoe outpost on the Wekiva, near where it joins Blackwater Creek and feeds the St. Johns. If you’re looking for wildlife and a natural environment, this is a magnificent place to see it by paddle power.
The upper half of the Wekiva is an aquatic preserve; the lower half is designated as “scenic and wild,” which summarizes the aesthetics and natural significance. The Moncriefs offer several canoe runs. Until then, here’s a thought from Katie: “The difference between here and there,” she says, jerking a thumb over the horizon, toward Orlando, “is the difference between the concrete jungle and the real thing.”
