The Loxahatchee River Canoe Trail is an eight-mile path rated by the canoe gods as intermediate in skill and moderate in difficulty with an average current of two-three mph – not exactly a whiplash course until you work upa lather. This designated “Wild and Scenic River” meanders through a subtropical river swamp that’s rife with bald cypress trees, pond apples, orchids and wild river ferns. The Seminole Indians dubbed it “land of the turtles,” which are some of the critters you’ll bumpinto here. The others include bobcats, otters, herons and ospreys. Along the way you can stop at Trapper Nelson’s cabin, where a fellow known as the “Wild Man of Loxahatchee” trapped and sold furs in the mid-19th century. Wind, tides and powerboat wakes can make this trail more challenging. For the full run, follow I-95 16 miles south of the St. Lucie-Martin county line, heading west on Hwy 706 and continuing 1½ miles to Riverbend Park. The short course, eight miles, begins at Jonathan Dickinson State Park on US 1, 16 miles south of the county line.
