The National Tropical Botanical Garden was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964 and opened to the public in 1971. Its principal property here, the 252-acre McBryde Garden, boasts lavish displays of tropical plants from throughout the world, and is one of the world’s great tropical research gardens, devoted to research and education in tropical plants. The adjacent, 100-acre Allerton Gardens, originally established in 1938 by Robert Allerton and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton, also features tropical plants, including several rare South Pacific plants introduced to Kauai by the Allertons. Also at the Allerton Gardens is the preserved, former home of Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV. Guided tours of McBryde Garden are offered at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m, and tours of Allerton Garden are offered at 9 a.m, 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tours depart from the Visitor Center across from Spouting Horn, and last approximately 2½ hours.
