Perth Travel Guide
Introduction
Perth looms large as the city that wrested the America's Cup – the preeminent yacht-racing trophy – from the Americans to end the longest winning streak in sporting history: 132 years! That was in 1983. The boat was Australia II. The keel was winged, the first of its kind. And even though the city lost the cup to America four years later, it has worn its pride on its sleeve and never looked back. The city, in any case, comes into its own as the loveliest of Australia's major cities, its crisp, picture-perfect skyline rising above the north bank of the Swan River into seemingly perpetual blue skies. There's a lively downtown centered around Hay Street, good bars – make that great bars – and fusion restaurants, locally-brewed Swan Lager for the boys, an island known as Rottnest just offshore for a city escape for snorkeling, sun-drenched golden beaches fronting on the Indian Ocean, and gorgeous sunsets for the asking. Indeed, here is a city of the good life, albeit set in isolation, clear across the continent and miles from nowhere, and yet as bubbly as they come.
Location
Perth is located on the west coast of Australia, on the Indian Ocean, in the state of Western Australia, of which it is the capital and largest city.
