Bregenz: The Town
When writer Alexandre Dumas first entered Bregenz, he portrayed Lake Constance as “a piece of heaven framed in earth to serve God as a mirror.” Although you might utter a somewhat less poetic phrase, it is undeniably a lovely lake. Your personal assessment of central Bregenz, however, will rely entirely on your taste for contemporary architecture, small-city bustle, and modern art.
The town stretches along the eastern edge of the lake, separated from the shore and its Seepromenade Park by train tracks and a busy road. The lakefront attractions here are anchored to the west by the Strandbad beach facilities and the festival’s floating stage and, to the east, by the jetty and the Mili swimming pool. The city center lies in-between, stretching back toward the hills and up toward Oberstadt, the walled old town. Mt. Pfander rises a modest 1,064 m to the east of the town center, its cable car departing from a valley station on the northeastern edge of town.
