Ischgl Travel Guide

Introduction

Ischgl is a small mountain village turned hip ski resort, with massive appeal among the party-hearty young lot. It is one of Austria's premier ski resorts, strung out along the western end of the Austrian Alps, hard up against the Swiss border. Its Silvretta ski area actually spills over into Switzerland to connect with the sprawling Swiss ski resort of Samnaun, jointly making up one of the largest ski areas in the Alps, with some 240 kilometers of pistes, served by more than 40 ski lifts and gondolas. The town enjoys notoriety, too, for its spirited Top of the Mountain Concert, held at the end of the ski season each year, at an elevation of 2,300 meters, which fairly rocks the resort town with smashing performances from the likes of Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Enrique Iglesias, Tina Turner, Sugarbabes, and Alicia Keys, among others.

Location

Ischgl is situated in the Alps along a 1.5-mile stretch of the southern bank of the Trisanna River, deep in the Paznaun Valley, in the western corner of Austria, literally on the border of Switzerland. It is roughly 62 miles (100 km) west of Innsbruck.

How to Get There

Sightseeing

Ischgl's main interest lies in its ski facilities, with at least three cable lifts – Pardatschgratbahn, Silvrettabahn and Fimbabahn – to whisk skiers from the village up the mountain to Idalp, the convergence point for several of the lifts. There are also several good restaurants, hotels, ski shops and sporting goods stores here, lined up along its tiny, narrow, unnamed streets. Besides which, there is a small museum in town, the Mathias Schmidt Museum, where the local artist's work and some historical items are on display; and St. Nikolaus Church, which has an ornate interior that's worth a peek.
