Mondsee

Mondsee, Austria (cc)

Mondsee

Farthest west in the region, the lake closest to Salzburg, the Mondsee (and its village of the same name) boast Sound of Music connections and a fascinating archeological history. At the Marktplatz in the village, St. Michael’s Church was the filming site for the Von Trapp wedding scene; and the village and its surrounding landscape features in several aerial shots as well.

More interesting to history buffs will be the Heimatmuseum, which documents the discovery of a local community dating from 2500 BC. Farther south, the Wolfgangsee lake runs 15 km and is flanked at its middle by the town of St. Wolfgang. The village is one of the region’s most popular for both water and winter sports, and its parish church and tower museum prove reasonably interesting. Farther east at Trunsee, the peaceful Traunkirche gleams, surrounded by water. Bad Ischl, the region’s most popular spa resort, lies in a valley to the southwest.
