Sightseeing in in Zell and Kaprun

The Sights

The focus of the Europa Sports Region falls on athletic rather than artistic, sightseeing or academic pursuits. Nonetheless, Zell’s lakeside promenade and historical center – now almost entirely car-free – are certainly worth a stroll. Of historical note are the 11th-century parish church – peek inside at the 13th- through 15th-century frescoes – and the nearby medieval Vogtturm, which now houses the town’s museum. In Kaprun, a tour around the reservoirs, dams, and technological works of the local hydroelectric scheme proves more interesting than it first sounds; and the village’s namesake castle opens occasionally for special events.

Three area museums merit attention. The Vogtturm Heimatmuseum in central Zell documents regional history in the intriguing space of the old tower at Kreuzgasse 2. Kaprun’s local history museum is on Parkstrasse. And Zell’s Vötters Oldtimer Museum collects cars and memorabilia from the ’50s through the ’70s.

Art hounds can visit the Schloss Rosenberg Gallery to view its rotating exhibition from regional and international artists at Brücker Bundesstrasse 2. In addition, a year-round sculpture garden tops Schmittenhöhe Mountain, pairing up the attractions of art and landscape in 27 wooden works.
