A Brief History of Innsbruck
Innsbruck sits on a site inhabited by Stone Age settlers as early as 4000 BC. The area’s position at the intersection of the Inn and Wipp valleys made it a coveted stop along the early trade routes through the Alps, a convenient locale that continues to enrich the city today. The region saw stints under both Roman and Bavarian rule during the first millennium, and mention is first made of “Insbrucke,” or “a bridge over the Inn River,” in the 12th century. The new town flourished from the 14th through the 19th centuries, enjoying booming growth as a cultural, administrative, and mining center. The ruling Hapsburg Family adored Innsbruck, making it their official residence and thereby attracting to the city the greatest artists, musicians, and writers of the time. The two world wars in the early 20th century brought the city’s rise to an abrupt halt; but, even though extensive damage befell the city during World War II, it rebounded quickly, taking the world stage once more as host of the Olympic Winter Games both in 1964 and again in 1976.
