Bruges Travel Guide
Introduction
Bruges, Brugge in Dutch, is for those with a hankering for chocolate and medieval architecture. It is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, with a supremely historic city center made famous by the 2008 British-American black comedy, In Bruges, and now a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has canals and turreted Gothic churches, and a lovely market square centered around the statues of patriots Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck and surrounded by fabulous old buildings, notable among them the impressive Neo-Gothic Provincial Court and a church with a 12th-century belfry featured in In Bruges. The city itself is packed with museums and galleries and peppered with a healthy dose of theaters and cinemas, old cathedrals, lace shops, chocolatiers, cozy little cafés and pubs where a full line of Bruges-brewed beers, from "blondes" to "double browns," is poured with foaming heads. The city also has one of the richest offerings of music and cultural festivals in Europe.
Location
Bruges is situated at the northwestern end of Belgium, near the Atlantic coast and the border of Netherlands.
