Manaus Travel Guide

Introduction

Manaus, capital of the Amazonas, Brazil's largest state, is the gateway to the Amazon, where the trip into the Amazon begins. For the city sits on the banks of the Rio Negro, just 11 miles (18 km) downriver from the confluence of the Rio Negro with the Solimões River to form the mighty Amazon River, practically on the doorstep of the Amazon Rainforest. From here, adventures lead into the jungle, to forest lodges and indigenous villages, to sample local fish and spot alligators and exotic birds unique to the Amazon. But in all fairness, Manaus itself is worthy of a visit, a fascinating port city buzzing with activity, where locals tie up their brightly-colored river boats at the floating docks to sell their locally-grown produce and freshly-caught fish and an assortment of handicrafts to boot; while others hawk goods at the lively Art Nouveau-style Mercado Municipal, modeled after Paris' Les Halles. The city has a well-developed arts scene and theater too, with a fabulous, salmon-colored opera house, Teatro Amazonas, where Italian tenor Enrico Caruso once sang and French film-actress Sarah Bernhardt emoted, and others besides. Ultimately though, Manaus remains, as it did at the start of the 20th century, the "Heart of the Amazon and City of the Forest," and an ecotourist destination of no small significance.

Location

Manaus is located in the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil, some 1,203 miles (1,936 km) northwest of the Brazilian capital, Brasília.
