Anegada

Anegada

Anegada stands out for a variety of reasons. It is not on the Sir Francis Drake Channel, as are most of the other islands. The northernmost of the BVIs, Anegada is 20 miles northeast of Tortola. In addition, it is a coral island, while all of the others are volcanic. In many ways Anegada is more like a Pacific atoll than a Caribbean island. Its flora and fauna are unique and wild orchids are commonplace.

Only 15 square miles, its highest point is only 28 feet above the sea. You can see how it got its name – Anegada means “Drowned Land.” The island has lovely beaches on its northern and western shores, but its most unusual feature is the spectacular 13-mile coral reef that encircles the island.

The 250 residents of Anegada live in two small communities, The Settlement and Loblolly Bay. Most residents are fishermen.
