Exploring Virgin Gorda

Orientation

For such a small island (8.1 square miles), Virgin Gorda has three geographically distinct areas.

The South

The southern end of Virgin Gorda is flat and strewn with giant boulders. It is home to Spanish Town, the island’s capital and the area where most islanders live. The island’s most famous site, The Baths, is located here as well. The Baths is a great beach on the southwest coast where the boulders have fallen in such a way as to create offshore caves and quiet pools to snorkel and swim through. Other beaches nearby are part of a national park. Home to Little Dix Bay Resort and several villa communities, the southern end of Virgin Gorda is called The Valley.

The Central Strip

Connected to the south by a strip of land that is only one mile wide at some spots, the central part of Virgin Gorda was best known for Virgin Gorda Peak and National Park. It soars to 1,370 feet and can be climbed. Now, several new communities have opened on the western coast and new roads leading to them have opened up a score of beaches that were previously accessible by water or rocky trails

The North

The northern portion has developed around a stunning body of water called North Sound. It houses several small islands – some inhabited and others uninhabited but with anchorages. The southern coast of North Sound is home to Leverick Bay Resort and the tiny settlement of Gun Creek. Water taxis leave from Gun Creek for the resort hotels on North Sound’s northern arm. Biras Creek and The Bitter End Yacht Club are accessible only by boat. The North Sound area is beautiful.
