To really feel like you’re in the midst of the karst scenery, this is the place, set on the river’s edge and engulfed by the forest of pinnacles. They have attractive, simple rooms with jaw-dropping views, a restaurant serving both Chinese and Western fare and welcoming staff. In addition to swimming, you can also go bamboo rafting, rent bicycles, arrange climbing trips and Chinese cooking classes and there’s wireless Internet throughout. To get out to the retreat call in advance and they will arrange someone to pick you up from Yangshuo. If you want to make your own way here by bike, it’s signposted off to the right from a bridge a mile before Moon Hill, then it’s two miles along a bumpy track – the ride takes half an hour from Yangshuo.
