This 450-year-old building lies in the heart of old Suzhou. Surrounded by traditional houses, canals and walkways, its quiet location on the edge of the Pingjiang Canal makes for an excellent retreat. Built by the Fang family during the Ming Dynasty, the lodge still contains original furniture and pictures. The 42 rooms are clustered around numerous courtyards and traditional gardens, designed to evoke serenity and peace. Anumber of rooms have windows overlooking the canal. There is also an attractive restaurant serving both Chinese and Western fare. Call ahead before you arrive and they’ll arrange a transfer for you.
