Tilarán

Tilarán

Tilarán is a cool country town at the center of farmlands and horse and cattle ranching. It’s an unpretentious place that can serve as a base for trips to several destinations, with a comfortable climate and lots of activities. Its main claim to fame, however, is the popular Fiesta de Dias Civicas – a rodeo, livestock show and country fair held the last weekend of April each year.

Eat at La Carreta Restaurant behind the cathedral; you can’t miss the signs. Billie and Tom Jaffe from Florida opened it in 1994 and their food is legendary. It has an unusual gift shop and a good menu. Dine on the shady porch where plastic bags, filled with water, hang from the rafters. Apparently, the sun’s rays refract in prisms that seem to keep away flies.

From Tilarán you may be able to see the Tenorio Vol- cano (no facilities) to the north, which looks like any other mountain.

The roundabout-the-lake route from Lake Arenal leads to Tilarán and from there, access to the western beaches of Nicoya and Guanacaste or to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest. And from Tilarán there is a back way to Monteverde and a good road to the Inter-American Highway, which can take you to Guanacaste or back to San José.
