For very cheap in-town digs, we preferred the asic Hotel El Jardín (shared bath) on Av Central, a half-block west of the park. The hotel and their little restaurant out front are very clean. Around the corner on Av 2 and Calle 2 is the upstairs La Cascada, an extremely popular modern bar and restaurant with balcony views of the street below and fairy castle-styled Cine Valle, the only movie theater for mucho miles.
American rock and roll and two cable TVs attract a young crowd for bocas or a plata fuerte (full meal). Next to the cathedral facing the plaza is Delji, a winged design fast-food chicken shack – eat on picnic tables or take out. Colonel Sanders, eat your heart out.
