San Isidro de General
The first cars to reach San Isidro, which was founded in 1897 at an altitude of 709 meters/2,332 feet above sea level, didn’t come until 1945. Since then it has prospered with the surrounding agricultural boom in the Valle de General and, although still small, is an important hub and crossroads for the south. If you’re making a circuit up from Dominical, try to spend a night here just to enjoy the non-touristy atmosphere and leave early for the mountain crossing. The town sits down a bit west of the highway. It’s clean and safe, with a pretty park in the center. The bustling new mercado between Calle Central and Calle 2 is very attractive (the old market is now the Southern Regional Museum) and although there is very little of interest for tourists, we like to stop and look around. San Isidro can be a central base for exploring the area, rafting the challenging Río El General and Coto Brus rivers, nipping down to the Pacific beaches, or hiking Mt. Chirripó. Non-city folk have other accommodation choices outside town in the mountains. For some very good eco-lodges and rural accommodations outside town, look around Mt. Chirripó.
