St. Rémy-de-Provence Travel Guide

Introduction

St. Rémy-de-Provence, or simply St. Rémy, is a small gem of a town with historic connections to poets, philosophers, musicians and artists, though none more famous than Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh, in fact, spent much of the last year of his life, from 1889 to 1890, painting frantically in St. Rémy. He committed himself to an asylum here – St. Paul de Mausole, parts of which can be visited – and produced some 150 canvases, among them Starry Night and Irises in a Vase, and a host of others depicting olive groves and cypresses, rocks and mountains, all of which make the St. Rémy landscape seem so familiar to many. St. Rémy, in any case, offers some of the oldest evidence of settlement in France, and a lovely old town center with narrow, winding lanes and tree-lined avenues with 14th- and 15th-century town houses set upon them. There is no dearth of good restaurants here, ranging from Michelin-starred establishments to casual sidewalk cafés, together with interesting little shops and one of the best markets in Provence when the entire town is brimming with stalls and vendors. St. Rémy, besides, is within easy reach of such wonderful villages as Les Baux de Provence, Eygalières and Maussane-les-Alpilles, and, too, a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, surrounded by countryside rich in opportunities for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, caving, rock climbing, hang-gliding and even parasailing.
