Introduction
Avignon has one of the largest and most famous arts festivals in Europe – right up there with the one in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Avignon Festival of Theatre and Dance is actually a continual open-air performance that runs through most of July, but with a different performance offered every night of the month, where jongleurs, mime artists and musicians turn Avignon into a virtual festival city. The city itself is supremely ancient, walled in, and thoroughly enchanting, with narrow, winding, pedestrians-only streets emerging on shade-dappled squares lined with sidewalk cafés and sunny plazas alive with song and music. In fact, within the seven gates of the city, there are centuries-old papal palaces and cathedrals, museums and galleries, and theaters, cinemas, music clubs, restaurants, and great shopping in chic boutiques and shops and traditional markets. What's more, UNESCO has now designated the Historic Center of Avignon a World Heritage Site. Indeed, Avignon is a genuinely seductive place, at once peaceful, lively and entertaining, and a beloved destination of tourists, which all but sparkles in the golden glow of the sunset.
