Introduction
Beaucaire is a festive little pleasure port on the Rhône River, popular as a center for the Course Camarguaise. It's an ideal starting point for canal trips into the Camargue, journeying up the Canal du Rhône à Sète, and offers, besides, a full spectrum of water sports, including kayaking, canoeing, rowing, surfboarding, and even dinghy sailing. In town itself there are ruins of a medieval castle and grand mansions from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries – the heyday of Beaucaire, when it hosted the richest commercial fair in Europe, Foire de la Madeleine, a week-long affair that attracted some 50,000 visitors daily, bringing great prosperity to the town and its merchants and residents. The town now hosts colorful events and festivals all summer, including a modern version of Foire de la Madeleine that features parties, carnival rides, disco dancing, and a Pamplona-style bull run through its streets.
