Eygalières

The village of Eygalières in the Alpilles, France (cc)

Eygalières Travel Guide

Introduction

Eygalières is a tiny village of stone houses, ancient fountains and Roman-Gallo remains, wrapped around a small hill amid the shallow, rock-strewn peaks of the Alpilles in the south of France. It has several excellent restaurants, pleasant little hotels, and a très typique bar-tabac. Also, a little way from the village, just to the east on the D24B, you can visit a 12th-century chapel and hermitage, Chapelle de St. Sixte, which is open on the saint's day and Easter and is also the locale of many local weddings. But apart from all of Eygalières' physical attributes, the village has an illustrious past that is just as interesting, for it describes the story of a nobleman who, back in 1660, became impoverished and thus sold all the land in Eygalières to its peasants, turning them into emancipated landowners – and that was more than 130 years before the French Revolution! Eygalières, by the way, is also on the area's cycling circuit.

Location

Eygalières is located some 8 miles (12 km) from St. Rémy in the Bouches-du-Rhône Department in southern France.
