Built in the first century BC, Nîmes’ oval arena was once the scene of gladiatorial battles and lion hunts. During the Dark Ages, the people of Nîmes took shelter from marauding barbarians within its walls. At one time it contained a church and a small village! Today it is used for festivals, sports and cultural events year-round – in winter, a lentil-shaped roof is pulled over. Constructed in 34 tiers to seat more than 20,000 spectators, the games held here led to the codification of modern bullfighting.
