Königstuhl and Burgenstraße

Königstuhl

Königstuhl is a 568-m (1,864-ft) peak five km (three miles) southeast of Heidelberg. It can be reached by car, bus, or most easily by the Bergbahn (funicular) that runs from Heidelberg old town via the castle and Molkenkur. Molkenkur was the site of a castle that was destroyed by lightning in the early 16th century and never rebuilt. It currently has a restaurant with great views.

At the top of Königstuhl are several restaurants, a TV tower, and a fairy tale theme park. It is also the start of at least 12 marked hiking trails. The funicular, which runs every 10 minutes in summer and every 20 minutes in winter, takes just over 15 minutes.

Burgenstraße

The Burgenstraße (Castles Road), www.burgenstrasse.de, is one of Germany’s most popular tourist routes. It connects Mannheim and Prague but en route goes through Heidelberg, the Neckar Valley, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Nürnberg, among others. The total route is almost 1,000 km (600 miles) and passes castles, fortified towns, and exciting landscapes. The Neckar Valley, upriver from Heidelberg, is particularly exciting for its castles and natural beauty.

Deutsche Touring, Am Römerhof 17, 60486 Frankfurt am Main,  069-790-350, www.deutsche-touring.de, has a daily bus from May to September on the stretch between Mannheim and Rothenburg.
