The largest church on the island is another two km (1.2 miles) down the main road in Mittelzell. The Münster St Maria und St Martin, has a history dating back to the eighth century but the current Romanesque church is mainly 11th century with 15thcentury additions. The 13thcentury roof beams were left bare after a restoration project in the 1960s. The oak roof frame is a wonderful example of medieval craftsmanship and may be the oldest roof frame in Germany. The choir is only accessible when the treasury is open and has some relics and reliquaries, as well as 14th-century wall and ceiling paintings. The Schatzkammer (Treasury) has five Gothic reliquaries, sixth-century items, as well as a Roman crucifix from AD 170.
