The Benedictine Kloster Alpirsbach (Monastery) was founded in 1095. The first church was consecrated in 1099 and the Torturm (Gate Tower) survived from this structure. The Romanesque parts of the St Nicolas Church date from 1130, while the Gothic parts are mainly late 15th century. The wall paintings in the middle altar niche in the east apses are original 13th century–the light switch is on the left of the niche.

The sacristy is from the first part of the 13th century and one of the oldest Gothic works in Germany. The richly decorated Late Gothic cloisters south of the church are surrounded by late 15th-century structures. The Reformation spelled the end for the Benedictine order here, but it was used as a Protestant institution up to 1807.
