In addition to the Baroque monastery, the main sight on the island is the thousand-year-old Romanesque church. Its freestanding, onion-domed campanile was erected in the 11th century as the first high building in southern Bavaria. During the 1950s, frescoes dating back to 1130 were rediscovered. The nearby Carolingian Torhalle (Gate Portal, below), is one of the oldest buildings in Bavaria and has an angel cycle painted in 860.
