Bavarian Alps Travel Guide

Introduction

The Bavarian Alps run the length of the German Alpine Route, one of the most popular tourist areas in Germany. From Lindau on the Bodensee to Berchtesgaden near Salzburg and the Austrian border, the Alps rise dramatically from green meadows and rolling hills, offering up some of the loveliest vistas in the region. The Bavarian Alps are typically lower than their counterparts in Austria and Switzerland, but no less picturesque. Here, the landscape is strewn with resort towns and charming little alpine villages rich in history and interesting buildings, interspersed with lakes, rivers and outdoor recreation areas that are abundant in recreational opportunities such as hiking and biking, with the local ski areas just as popular in the wintertime. Among the prized resorts and villages here are Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the most famous, and Mittenwald, Ettal, Linderhoff, Oberammergau, Steingaden, Berchtesgaden, Obersalzberg – notable as Hitler's mountain retreat – and Königssee.

Location

The Bavarian Alps are located in the German State of Bavaria in southern Germany, extending south into Austria.

How to Get There

The Bavarian Alps can be easily reached by road or rail from various points in the region. The approaches from Munich and the north are particularly rewarding, with the scenery at its most spectacular.
