Taunus

The Taunus is a rural region overrun by a series of shallow, wooded mountains, quite pretty really, fanning out from just north of Frankfurt to the River Lahn. There is history here, and natural beauty. More than a hundred castles once populated the area, only a few of which remain, and those, too, largely in ruins. In their stead there is now a string of attractive little towns and villages, encroached upon by tangled forests, with an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities to lure the city people. The principal towns here are Bad Homburg, the largest and most interesting of them all; Saalburg, a restored Roman castelium with a museum; Kronberg, an absolutely charming town with a castle and luxury palace hotel, almost completely surrounded by forests; and Königstein, an historic and lovely town, overlooked by the marvelous Königstein Castle ruins.

The Taunus and its towns are within easy driving distance of Frankfurt, while the Taunus area itself is covered with walking and biking routes, making it an ideal destination for weekend getaways and a joy to tour.
