Sightseeing in Celle
The main sight in Celle is its beautiful old town. Most of the 500 preserved half-timbered houses date from the 16th to 18th century and are still used as houses, shops, and other businesses. In contrast to most other towns in the region, the A-shape gable of most houses faces the street front, and not to the side as is more common elsewhere. Also note the high number of corner houses with small towers and turrets – this was a building requirement until the church tower was erected in 1913.

The oldest dated house in town is at Am Heiligen Kreuz 26, built in 1526 with a Gothic gable. The Hoppenerhaus (1532), corner of Post and Rundestraße, is the most impressive house in town. All the streets of the old town are lined with half-timbered buildings but the Zöllner and Neue Straße have particularly good samples.

The Stadtkirche St Marien (St Mary’s Town Church) is a Gothic building dating partly from the 13th century. The rich Baroque interior with stuccos was done in the late 17th century. The Stechbahn, a wide road leading from the Schloss into the old town, was formerly used as a tournament course. Upon it is the Alte Rathaus (old town hall) which has a vaulted Gothic cellar and a Renaissance façade, while across the road is a Glockenspiel (Carillon) that sounds each hour. Both are worth seeing.

The Bomann Museum, Schlossplatz 7, is a large regional museum with mainly displays on local history and folklore. A complete farmer’s house interior and an inn are displayed. A recent addition is the 24-Stunden-Kunstmuseum (24-Hour Art Gallery) with modern art sculptures, paintings, and light displays. The Herzogschloss (Ducal Palace) is set inside a park. Parts of the Schloss date back to 1292, but the present Baroque appearance is mostly 17th century.
