Jasmund National Park and the Chalk Cliffs of Rügen
Jasmund National Park is a popular hiking area on the island, just north of Sassnitz. The top destination is of course the chalk cliffs at Stubbenkammer. The most famous viewing point is Königstuhl, a 117-m (384-foot) cliff projecting over the sea. No less impressive, and generally a lot more peaceful, is the view from nearby Victoria- Sicht (Victoria’s View). To reach the area by car, park in Hagen – the parking area is well-signposted. From here, it is an easy three-km (1.8-mile) hike through a thick forest along a clearly marked trail. Alternatively, take the shuttle bus, which runs every 10 minutes. Admission is charged to enter Königstuhl (€1) but it’s free to Victoria-Sicht. The best views are early in the morning when the white cliffs change color with the rising sun and before the hordes of bus tour groups arrive. However, bear in mind that these cliffs are fairly small in comparison to other parts of Europe such as Normandy or Dover.
