Remagen

Remagen

Remagen is just over 20 km (12 miles) south of Bonn. It is most famous for its former rail bridge that fell undamaged into the hands of the advancing American forces on March 7, 1945. This allowed the Americans to establish a bridgehead on the east side of the Rhine. According to General Eisenhower, the bridge was worth its weight in gold. It collapsed 10 days later under the weight of tanks, but by then a suitable pontoon bridge was already in place.

The rest of the bridge was torn down, as it hindered navigation on the Rhine, but the towers on both sides of the river survived. They now house a Peace Museum with displays on the history of the bridge.
