Dinkelsbühl
Dinkelsbühl, 30 miles southeast of Rothenburg on country roads and six miles from the Autobahn A7, is for many an alternative to overcrowded Rothenburg. Like Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühlt is entirely surrounded by a town wall and most of the Old Town buildings date from before the 16th century. The town was spared the ravages of war and since 1826 had the town defenses under protection order. Currently, 18 watchtowers survived. Dinkelsbühl's town walls are lower and much thinner than those of Rothenburg and, although it is possible to walk around the town, it is not actually possible to walk on the walls.
Sightseeing in Dinkelsbühl
Dinkelsbühl is best enjoyed by walking the old streets and seeing the interesting architecture. The Münster St Georg (Minster of St George) is worth entering, as it is one of the most beautiful hall churches in Germany. The church has a 213-ft Romanesque tower but most of the rest of the building and interior is Gothic. Note the statues of the Last Supper on the outside wall of the choir. Inside, the church is filled with art with the late-15th-century tabernacle of the sacristy and the high altar especially noteworthy.
The Weinmarkt and Marktplatz directly in front of the Minster are the most beautiful parts of the town. It has several large, half-timbered houses, including the Deutsches Haus from the 16th century. Segringer Straße, leading west from the square, also has particularly beautiful buildings.
