The Rheinische Landesmuseum (Archeological Museum), has the largest collection of Roman artifacts in Germany and perfectly complements a tour of the larger ruins in the town. Highlights include several Roman burial monuments and mosaics. Rather unusual for a museum, one of the mosaics is still displayed and used as a floor, allowing visitors to admire it up close. City models explain Trier in Roman times, with several rooms dedicated to religion and ancient wine culture.

A reconstruction of the 23-m high (75-foot) Iglerer Säule, a grave monument near Trier, confirms that the Roman color taste might now be considered kitsch. Some non-Roman finds, including Stone Age, Celtic and Merovingian, plus a few Renaissance and Baroque rooms, round off the display.
