The Mosel Valley
The 545-km (325-mile) Mosel River is one of the longest tributaries of the Rhine. It is a meandering river with a steep valley often more dramatic than the wider Rhine. Like the Rhine, its valleys are planted with vines and castles lurk at every twist and turn. Driving through the valley is slow, due to all the river curves, but rewarding. The natural beauty of the valley is awesome and many picture-perfect villages are strewn along the way.
Close to the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine in Koblenz, is Burg Eltz, the loveliest castle in Germany. Cochem is a famous town with an impressive Historicist castle. The wine towns Zell, Traben-Trarbach, and Bernkastel- Kues are several twists and turns farther upriver.
Valleys of the Rhineland
Trier is at the far end of the Mosel, where the river enters Germany from France and forms part of the German-Luxemburg border. It is 192 river km (115 miles) from Koblenz. The city was founded by the Romans and has the largest collection of Roman monuments in Germany. Apart from Koblenz, Trier is the only large city on the banks of the Mosel. It is slightly off the main tourist routes but easy to reach and well worth the effort.
