Sightseeing in Meißen
The Meißen skyline is dominated by the Burgberg (Fortress Mountain) with the historic Albrechtsburg Meißen, Domplatz 1. The castle, which was the first of its kind in Germany, is more a residence palace than a fortress. It was commissioned in 1464 by the brothers Ernst and Albrecht Wettiner, who jointly ruled what is mostly modern-day Saxony and Thuringia.
Next to the castle is the Dom zu Meißen (Cathedral), Domplatz 7. The current building was constructed between 1250 and 1400 in a pure Gothic style to replace the previous Romanesque structure. Of special note are the bronze funerary plaques based on designs by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach, as well as the Lay Brothers’ Altar and Benefactors’ statues from the studio of Cranach.
There are many dining options at the Dom square and also at the Marktplatz at the bottom of the hill in the center of the old town. In 1472, the town ordered a new Rathaus (town hall) in order to keep up with the Wettiners. The resulting building still dominates the market square.
