Eastern Bank of the Danube

North on the banks of the Danube, on the Pest side, are the rolling hills and the backwater area of the Danube River. It is fed by several streams and rivers, and leads eventually to the foothills and then the mountains of Börzsöny. There's something of everything here. If you are so inclined, almost every city or village on the shoreline has docking facilities. Göd and Szödliget play host to yachts and pleasure craft on their Duna shores. For Hungarians, skiing is a starved sport in this land of little snow; so they have developed grass ski slopes at Szokolya. The natural wonders, the former volcano (Dél-Börzsöny Csõvár), the Limestone quarry at Naszályu, the Somlyó mountains of Fót, made famous by their grapes, and the Danube’s wonderful arteries and byways are intermixed with castles and villages that still retain medieval ways.

East from there are the northern rolling lowlands of Pest, which is a part of the Great Alföld. It is easily accessible by auto or by bicycle, and there are numerous walking trails. Byways interconnect all points as well. Take Route 12 north, or by train make connection on the oldest railroad in Hungary, via Budapest – the Vác line. On the way, the real character of the countryside can be sampled.
