Lucca Travel Guide

Introduction

Lucca is a lovely Etruscan city, more than 2,500 years old, full of character and atmosphere, nestled in the plain between the Apennines and Monte Pisano. Its most notable feature is its glorious Renaissance-era city wall, well preserved through the centuries, virtually intact, running some 2.5 miles (4 km) to encircle the old part of the city. Within the walls lies a fabulous old town, originally laid out by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, brimming with medieval buildings winding around narrow, ancient streets that lead onto irregularly-shaped squares that are a delight to discover, with pleasant little gardens, half-hidden churches, 16th-century palazzi (palaces) and protruding, centuries-old tower-houses. There are some good museums here, as well as outdoor cafés, colorful shops and boutiques, and scenic city walks. Besides which, the city hosts a couple of popular festivals, notably the Lucca Summer Festival which in the past has drawn the likes of Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and Santana to play live at Lucca's Piazza Napoleone, and the Lucca Comics and Games Festival, the largest such festival in Italy. The name Lucca, by the way, is derived from the Ligurian word "luk," meaning "swamp," for the city is built, as unlikely as it may seem, on a "luk!"

Location

Lucca is situated in the Tuscany region in west-central Italy, in the fertile plain between the Apennines and Monte Pisano, on the banks of the River Serchio, near the Tyrrhenian Sea.
