Trujillo Travel Guide
Introduction
Trujillo is a small town with a huge claim to fame: It is a town of conquistadors. It is the birthplace of Francisco Pizarro, the most famous of them all, and Francisco de Orellana and a host of other tough-spirited explorers and conquerors who went forth into the New World to make their names and fortunes. In the Americas, there are towns named Trujillo – in Mexico, in Honduras, in Peru, and so on – and every one of them was named by a conquistador who hailed from this little town in Spain. There is a monument in town dedicated to Pizarro: an equestrian statue of the conquistador. It stands in the Plaza Mayor, the town's main square.
Location
Trujillo is situated in the southwestern Spanish province of Extremadura, 56 miles northeast of Mérida, or 28 miles east of Cáceres.
Trujillo's main attractions, other than the statue of Francisco Pizarro, include a string of palaces of the conquistador families, an old Arab fortress (the Alcazaba), the 13th-century Church of Santa Maria, and a handful of museums, including one devoted to Pizarro and another to wine and cheese. The Plaza Mayor, the town's main square, and the walled old town hold interest too.
