Ronneby
Ronneby has the distinction of being the oldest city in Blekinge. Originally established in the 13th century, it remained the most important town in the province for centuries. During this period, the city also suffered two hugely debilitating tragedies: a brutal bloodbath in 1564 that resulted from a battle between Denmark and Sweden; and a devastating fire in 1864 that razed most of the town's buildings to the ground.
Ronneby is today a rather pleasant city to visit, with the area around its old, 12th-century church, which was spared from the fire, of particular interest to visitors. It is, however, best known as the locale of the Ronneby Brunn, one of the largest hotels and conference centers in Europe, as well as the river Ronnebyån where canoeing and fishing are popular pursuits. Brunnsparken, Ronneby's main park, was voted the best park in Sweden in 2005.
Ronneby has a resident population of around 11,000.
