Anchorage Travel Guide
Introduction
Anchorage is an all-American big city with an untamed, rural heart. It is the northernmost of America's major cities and, too, the most spirited of the lot. There are moose wandering through the backyards of its suburban homes, and dog-sled races – think Iditarod, one of the most famous and grueling in the world – heading off into the Arctic hinterland from the city's snow-covered streets; and yet, it has all the trappings of a mainland U.S. metropolis – five-star hotels, upscale restaurants, trendy boutiques and shops, good museums and galleries, lively theaters and performing arts venues, and even Broadway shows for culture hounds. Plus, the city enjoys a stupendous setting, surrounded by the spectacular Alaskan wilderness and a series of dramatic mountain ranges, notably the Chugach Mountains, making it possible for residents and visitors alike to hit the hiking and mountain-biking trails, and, in the wintertime, the ski slopes, without so much as breaking a sweat. What's more, you can fish for some of the best salmon on the planet right in the heart of town – and that's saying something!
Location
Anchorage is the northernmost city in the United States, situated in the south-central part of the state of Alaska, of which it is the capital. It is located north of the 60th parallel, with direct flights to and from several cities in the continental United States.
