Mariposa Grove

Mariposa Grove

Mariposa is 36 miles from the valley, just beyond the Wawona Village area near the park’s southern boundary. The grove offers quite a contrast from the other sights of Yosemite. Although you can drive into the grove itself, there is often a lot of traffic and the roads are very narrow and winding. Consider taking the shuttle bus service from Wawona. There is also a tram ride within the grove itself (see Special Activities).

Mariposa Grove contains stands of giant sequoia that rival those in Sequoia National Park. The oldest tree in the grove is the famous Grizzly Giant, with a girth of almost 97 feet and a height of 210 feet. There are taller specimens here, but none is as immense overall. There are also two trees within the grove that have had tunnels cut through them, the most famous being the 232-foot California Tree. A trail runs through the grove and can be used to discover many other outstanding examples of sequoia.

Give yourself about 1½ hours to visit Mariposa Grove. Total time for this area depends upon where you’ll be traveling to next. The one-way trip from the valley should take about an hour under optimal traffic conditions but, during the peak travel season, can take considerably longer.
