Southwest Colorado

Colorado’s southwestern corner encompasses a blending of cultures derived from at least two easily discernible sources. This much is known: Indians controlled the land for a very long time before white settlers arrived seeking gold and silver, or trailing herds of livestock shortly after the Civil War. Descendants of both are still here, doing things their own way and offering a rare chance in this modern world to experience a place where Indians and cowboys are the common folk. And you can add historic Hispanic flourishes along with modern civilization to the mix. You will also undoubtedly notice bulging car racks sporting mountain bikes, inflatable kayaks, skis or snowboards, as well as service directories touting herbal healers and body piercing, micro-breweries, bagel shops and espresso bars.
