Manele Bay and Hulopoe Bay

Two Bays and a Marine Life Preserve

Manele Bay lies approximately 7 miles directly south of Lanai City, sporting a small harbor that was used around the turn- of-the-century for shipping cattle, and which is now open to private as well as commercial boats. There’s a cove just to the southwest of the bay, Pu’u Pehe Cove, which has a small, sandy beach, and which in turn is adjoined to its west by another bay, Hulopoe Bay. At Hulopoe, too, there’s a beach, crescent shaped and sandy, one of Hawaii’s loveliest, with good swimming possibilities. But more importantly, the two bays, Manele and Hulopoe, are part of the protected Manele-Hulopoe Marine Life Conservation District, abundant in marine life and coral, offering some of the best snorkeling in the islands.

Also, directly above Hulopoe Beach, situated on a bluff overlooking both the beach and nearby Manele Bay, is the posh, 250-room Manele Bay Hotel, Lanai’s only waterfront resort, developed in 1991. The resort has an 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, Japanese, Hawaiian and Filipino gardens, and a South Pacific art collection.

Kaunolu

Kaunolu, situated in the southwest corner of the island, nearly 8 miles from Lanai City, is the site of a former fishing village and royal summer retreat, where you can still view an ancient Hawaiian temple, as well as some petroglyphs. Although hard to get to, this is also a good scuba diving and snorkeling area.
