Lahaina
Lahaina is a colorful little town, situated on the west coast of Maui. It is most notably a tourist mecca, filled with restaurants, art galleries, shops and boutiques. It is also an historic town that was the Royal Capital of Hawaii during the early part of the 19th century. In the early and mid 1800s, too, Lahaina became an important whaling port, overrun by lawless whalers, and beginning in 1823 when the first missionaries arrived on the island, mostly from New England, the town became a prominent center for missionary activity. Relics from both the missionary and whaling eras can still be seen here.
Much of Lahaina’s tourist activity is centered on Front Street, near the waterfront, where souvenir shops and art galleries are largely concentrated. Many of the town’s most visited points of interest are easily accessible from there as well, including the ancient Banyan Tree, the 19th- century Old Courthouse and Old Fort, Pioneer Inn, the square-rigger Brig Carthaginian, the Baldwin House Museum and Master’s Reading Room. Also worth visiting in Lahaina are the Buddhist Jodo Mission and Lahainaluna Seminary.
Ka'anapali
Ka’anapali, one of Maui’s most popular beach resorts, is located about 4 miles north of Lahaina. There is also a train, the Sugarcane Train, that runs between Lahaina and Ka’anapali. In Ka’anapali, there are no fewer than six full-fledged luxury hotels strung along the 3-mile-long, white-sand Ka’anapali Beach - Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt, Westin, Ka’anapali Beach Hotel and the Royal Lahaina - and several condominium complexes. Also at Ka’anapali is the Whaler’s Village, an outdoor shopping mall with more than 50 shops and restaurants, and where you can also visit the Whaling Museum.
Kapalua
Kapalua is one of West Maui’s most prestigious resorts, largely built around the magnificent, crescent-shaped, white-sand Kapalua Beach and the exclusive Kapalua Bay Hotel. There are also a couple of luxury condominium complexes at Kapalua.
