The Ghost Rails Inn (formerly the Montana Hotel) looks like a set from a western movie and will be a truly special part of your trip. This historic railroad hotel has been brought into the 21st century with its 10 pretty rooms, private baths, cable TV and free wireless Internet. The whimsical decor and delicious full breakfast, often accompanied by live harp music, make for a memorable lodging experience. And, it's an easy 1 day drive from Seattle, Yellowstone and Billings. Barely half a mile away, the Clark Fork River provides great fishing and the Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork offers some of Montana's best whitewater for rafting and kayaking. We can help book your adventures with our area's best local guides and float trip operators. Just let us know. Hunters love this part of Montana and we can help you with arranging that, too. The Montana Hotel, now the Ghost Rails Inn, was built in 1909 as a crew change hotel for the Milwaukee Road Railroad. In fact the whole town of Alberton pretty much came into existence because of that railroad. This was where they changed locomotives from electric powered for the plains to the east, to steam powered for the mountain passes west of here. When the Milwaukee abandoned services and pulled up the tracks in the mid 1970s, the town nearly disappeared too. Still small (population 400), Alberton today is coming back to life. The tracks are gone but the spirit lives on. And a few spirits seem to linger in our hotel.
